General Notes: In the name of God Amen, I JACOB G. SHARP of the town of Greenbush in the County of Rensselaer & State of New York being weak in body but of perfect & sound mind & memory (blessed be Almighty God for the same) calling to mind the mortality of my body & knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make & publish this my last will and Testament in manner & form following __


First, I resign my soul in the hands of Almighty God hoping & believing in a remission of my sins by the merits & meditation of Jesus Christ & my worldy estate I give & devise as follows:


First Item. I give devise & bequeath to MY SON NICHOLAS SHARPE & to his heirs & assigns forever the farm I bought of Samuel Simmons being part of the farm formerly owned by Henry C. Miller lying in the town of Greenbush with all and singular the appurtenances thereto belonging. Also one acre of land I purchased from John Heidley together with the buildings thereon erected & where my SON NICHOLAS now resides __


In Consideration of the above devise to my son NICHOLAS SHARPE that he or his heirs & assigns shall pay to MY DAUGHTER SARAH THE WIFE OF MICHAEL J. HEIDLEY the sum of two hundred dollars one year after my decease. Also the sum of two hundred dollars one year after my decease to MY DAUGHTER MARY THE WIFE OF THOMAS LAPE. And the further sum of two hundred dollars to MY DAUGHTER ELEANOR CATHARINE THE WIFE OF SIDNEY BETTS one year after my decease. The above devises to my daughters shall be a lien upon the farm above bequeathed by me to my son NICHOLAS. My son shall be subject to give to my WIFE GETTY one third of all the produce raised on the said farm & one third of All the fruit during her Lifetime __


Item Second. I devise & bequeath to MY SON JACOB SHARPE JUNR Eighty six acres & eight tenth of an acre be the same more or less lying in the town of Greenbush being a part of the farm I purchased from GEORGE SHARPE JR. & which was devised & bequeathed to him by GEORGE SHARPE deceased with all the appurtenances & hereditaments thereunto belonging & to his heirs & assigns forever & also bequeath unto my SON JACOB my bay mare which he now holds & uses __


In consideration of the above devise to my SON JACOB SHARPE JUN. he shall be subject to give my WIFE GETTY during her life one equal third part of all the produce raised on said farm each and every year, and he shall also deliver to my said WIFE GETTY five cords of good wood ready sawed at her door each & every year during her life time __


Item Third. I devise & bequeath to my SON COENRADT SHARPE & his heirs & assigns forever the farm whereon I now live containing seventy four acres of land lying in the town of Greenbush with all the hereditaments thereto belonging reserving for MY WIFE GETTY the choice room in the dwelling house & he shall be subject to deliver to my said WIFE GETTY during her lifetime & each & every year five cord of good wood ready sawed at her door __


Item Fourth. I give & bequeath to my SON STEPHEN VAN RENSSELAER SHARPE and to his heirs & assigns forever twenty two acres of land which I purchased from Benjamin Van Atten also forty two acres of land (adjoining the above) which I purchased from John Heidley. Also one & a half acre of land which I purchased from JACOB SHARPE all lying in the town of Greenbush with all the hereditaments & appurtenances thereto belonging __


In consideration of the above devise to my SON STEPHEN V. R. he shall be subject to give to my WIFE GETTY during her lifetime one equal third part of all produce raised on the two first lots of land maintained? in my devise to him each & every year during her life __


Item Fifth. I will & bequeath to my SON RICHARD LEONARD SHARPE & to his heirs & assigns forever twelve acres of wood lands lying & being in the town of Greenbush I purchased from GEORGE SHARPE JUNR. being the north west corner of the farm formerly belonging to GEORGE SHARPE deceased & devised by him to the said GEORGE SHARPE JUNR.


Item Sixth. I will & bequeath to my SON SAMUEL SHARPE & to his heirs and assigns forever & over & above that which I have given him (before this last will) sixty acres of land with all the hereditaments & appurtenances thereto belonging lying & being in the town of West Penfield in the County of Monroe where he now lives __


Item Seventh. I will & bequeath to MY BELOVED WIFE GETTY my double pleasure wagon & double harness also my horse sleigh or cutter & harness. Also my span of horses one bay & the other a brown ? those that I now use. Also my bureau. Also three feather beds, three bedsteads, three bedsticks, also bolsters & pillows for three beds, together with sheets quilts & blankets as many as she may deem necessary for three beds. Also three setts of bed curtains & valances. Also four cows, five sheep & twelve dunghill fowls such as she may select __


Item Eight. Should either of my sons named in this my last Will & Testament die leaving lawful issue I do then in such case give & devise to the child or children of my said sons respectively so dying & leaving lawful issue such share as he or they their parents respectively would have been entitled to be my will of any & all the (provisions?) herein before contained if living __


Item Ninth. I give & bequeath the remainder of my personal property to my children both sons & daughters to be equally divided between them share & share alike as near as can be done __


And lastly I do hereby constitute & appoint my WIFE GETTY Executor & my SONS NICHOLAS SHARPE & JACOB SHARPE JUNR. Executors to this my last Will & Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made __

Rensselaer County
Letter of Testamentary granted on the Will of Francis Brock. Deceased. Recorded 5th March, 1825.

The people of the state of New York by the grace of God. Free and independent for all Whom on these presents shall come or may concern send greeting. Know ye that at the City of Troy in the County of Rensselaer on the fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight before Phillip Viele Esquire Surrogate of our said County the last Will and Testament of Francis BROCK late of the town of Grafton in the County of Rensselaer and State of New York, Deceased, (A copy whereof is here unto annexed) was proved and is now appointed and allowed by us and the said deceased having whilst he lived and at the time of his death goods chattel and credits within this state (by means whereof the proving and registering of the said Will and the granting administration of all and singular the said goods, chattel, and credits and also the auditing allowing and final discharging of the accounts thereof doth belong to us.) The administration of all and singular the goods, chattels, and credits of the said deceased and any way concerning his will is granted unto Daniel MILLS and Jonathon BROCK. The executors in the said Will named they being first duly sworn well and faithfully to administer the same and to make and exhibit a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the said goods, chattels, and credits and also to render a just and true account thereof when thereunto required.

In testimony whereof we have caused the seal of Office of our said Surrogate to be here unto affixed. Witness Phillip Viele Esquire Surrogate of the said County at the City of Troy the fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight.

In the name of God Amen. I, Francis BROCK of Grafton in the County of Rensselaer being well in body and of perfect mind and memory and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die and afterwards come to judgement do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament viz:

Firstly, I bequeath my body to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the expense of my Executors. And my soul to God that gave it.

Secondly, I bequeath to my wife KATHARINE all my household goods and furniture for her use and benefit and to dispose of as she thinks proper and the use and control of my farm and real estate during the lease of the same.

Thirdly, I bequeath to the heirs of my son Ebenezer BROCK, Deceased, Twenty dollars each to be paid by John BROCK and Asa when the youngest of said heirs arrives to twenty one years old: the said heirs is Francis BROCK, Martin BROCK, and John BROCK.

Fourthly, I bequeath to my son Jonathan BROCK one dollar to be paid by John and Asa BROCK out of my estate.

Fifthly, I bequeath to my daughter Katharine WEST one dollar to be paid by John and Asa Brock out of my estate.

Sixthly, I bequeath to my son Nathan A. one dollar to be paid as aforesaid.

Seventhly, I bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth BECKHAM one dollar to be paid as aforesaid.

Eighthly, I bequeath to my son David BROCK one dollar to be paid as aforesaid.

Ninthly, I bequeath to my daughter Mary WEST one dollar to be paid as aforesaid.

Tenthly, I bequeath to my son Francis BROCK Jr. one dollar to be paid as aforesaid.

Eleventhly, I bequeath to my son Daniel M. BROCK one dollar to be paid as aforesaid.

Twelfthly, I bequeath to my sons John BROCK and Asa BROCK all my stock, wagon, cart, sleigh, and farming utensils. And all debt that may be due to me at my decease, After paying the several legacies herein contained to be for their use and benefit equally to each after the decease of my wife.

Thirteenthly, I bequeath to my daughter Esther SCRIVEN one dollar to be paid as aforesaid.

Fourteenthly, I bequeath to my son Nathan A. BROCK's daughters Katharine and Amy one heifer each, worth thirteen dollars each. And to the said Nathan A's son Michael West BROCK one yoke of steers worth fourteen dollars to be paid when they become lawfully of age by John and Asa BROCK as aforesaid.

And I hereby nominate and appoint Daniel MILLS, Jonathan BROCK, and Caleb NICHOLS Executors to this my last Will and Testament.

In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in Grafton this twenty third day of December in the year of our Lord 1823.

Order Letter of Testament
State of New York.

Rensselaer County ss: Be it Remembered That on the fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight personally appeared before me Phillip Viele Esquire Surrogate of the said County of Rensselaer, John MILLS and Benjamin MILLS two of the subscribing witnesses of the Will of Francis BROCK late of the town of Grafton in said County, deceased. Who being duly sworn declared that they did see the said Francis BROCK seal and execute the annexed written Instrument purporting to be the last Will and Testament of the said Francis BROCK bearing date the twenty third day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty three, and heard him publish and declare the same as and for his last Will and Testament, that at the time thereof he the said Francis was of sound disposing mind and memory to the best of the Knowledge and belief of the said John Mills and Benjamin Mills, and that they the said John and Benjamin together with Daniel Mills the other witness to the said Will severally subscribed their hands and names to the said Will as witnesses thereto, in the presence of the testator and each other.

In testimony whereof, the said Surrogate half hereto set his hand and affixed the seal of his Office the day and year aforesaid.

General Notes: He was a Revolutionary War veteran.

714. Roswell Woodworth, son of Nathaniel Woodworth and Priscilla Randall , was born on 1 May 1763 in Groton, Connecticut, died on 31 Jul 1847 in New Lebanon, Columbia Co., NY, at age 84, and was buried in Cornwall-Tilden Cemetery, New Lebanon, New York.

General Notes: On the 19th day of October 1780 I Roswell Woodworth was wounded in the Revolutionary War in an action when Colonel Brown was killed at Stonearaby on the Mohawk River in my left arm near the shoulder joint that broke it all to peaces the day before our time was out for three months ? Brewster of Beckit was our surgeon of Colonel Browns regiment he took out five pieces of bone the first time he dressed it Major Oliver Koot was present when it was dressed he was in the action when he was wounded the next day we was carried to Shenactady in the batteaux then it hurt me very much to git to Albany hospital and had to stay there eight months. The second day from the time I was wounded I had to stay eight months in the hospital and the latter part of June 1781 I was carried to Blanford Mass where my father lived and while I was in the hospital doct Tons and was the head doct of the hospital all the time I was there and when I went away it was him to give me a discharge that would clean me from the war for ever. I should think so and that discharge I gave to Gen Abrm Ten Brook the 25th day of January 1788 when my pension was granted since that his house has been burnt down and in one year from the time I was wounded the 19th day of October 1781 the last bone was taken to by Doct. Bohan ?king of Blanford, Mass and for one year after that time I was not able to do nothing with that lame arm to speak of at tall When I was in the hospital my arm youst to swell up where the bone wanted to come out and when it was time doct Tounsand him self cut my arm open six or seven time in that eight months and took about twenty pieces of bone out of my arm in three or four places between my shoulder and elbow in all time since at war.
The 18 of March 1822 I got the first certificate I had from our major to Mr. John ? chariman and the 20th sent and got another the following is a copy. I the subscriber do thereby certify that Roswell Woodworth was in the action, at Stone Robby in the revolution on the 19th day of October 1780 at the time Col. Brown was killed and I also certify that the said Woodworth received a wound in his left arm near the shoulder at that time which shattered it severely and I further more certify he was a soldier in Capt Levis Elys company and that I was then major of the regiment and was in the same action and was personally knowing to the above named circumstances.

We the Subscribers Abraham Ten Brook and Peter Gansevoort junr, do certify that upon an examination in pursuance of the Law entitled ac act making provision for officers soldiers and seamen who have been disabled in the service of the United States passed the 22d of April 1786. We do find that Roswell Woodworth residing in the State of New York aged twenty four years Late a private in Capt Levi Elyer company in the regiment of Massachusetts Levis, Commanded by Colonel Brown and Claiming relief under the act of Congress--recite in the said law or an invalid in fact and that he became disabled in the service of the United State in consequence of a wound in his left arm on the 19 of October 1781 Mohawk River and do further certify that upon the principles of the said act of Congress the said Roswell Woodworth is entitled to the pay of two dollars per month given under our hands in the city of Albany on the twenty fifth day of January in the year of our Lord on thousand seven hundred and eight eight.

728. Jurge (George) Emmerich Sharp, son of Georg Emmerich Scherp and Anna Barbara Smit (Schmidt) , was christened on 28 Sep 1735 in Germantown, New York and died about 1815 in Greenbush, New York, about age 80.

730. Samuel Earing, son of Coll Ludewek Earing and Unknown , was born on 19 Oct 1750, died on 4 Aug 1836 in Greenbush, New York, at age 85, and was buried in family homestead Rensselaerwyck (now E. Greenbush) Rensselaer Co., NY.

General Notes: I SAMUEL EARING of Greenbush in the County of Rensselaer and State of New York being in health and of sound mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and Testament in manner following:


1st I direct my Executors to pay all my just debts and funeral expenses out of my Estate.


2nd Should my wife SARAH survive me I give and bequeath to her during her natural life, the one third part of all the produce of every description raised and on hand at my decease or which shall thereafter be annually raised during her life on the farm whereon I now live, known by the name of the HOMESTEAD FARM; and also on my farm whereon my son MICHAEL EARING now lives, known by the name of the VAN VALKENBERG PLACE. Which said produce shall be harvested and safely secured on the respective farms. The grain thrashed out and cleaned and the hole anually delivered to her in due season and in good order and fit for Market, by my Executors, & also to furnish and deliver to my wife yearly and every year during her live, one good fat hog killed and dressed, and one quarter of good feet beef. I also give to my wife one cow, four sheep, the choice of my flock and all her wearing apparel, and such of my household furniture as she may want or think proper to keep, and the use of one
Room in my dwelling House, she to have her choice of the rooms, and the Kitchen together with three hundred Dollars in money to be paid to her out of my Estate by my Executors in six months after my decease, which bequeath I make to her in lieu of her dower.


3rd I give and devise to my son MICHAEL EARING and to his heirs and assigns forever, my farm whereon he now lives, situated in the town of Greenbush and is known by the name of the VAN VALKENBURGH FARM OR PLACE, and also all that part of the farm I now live on, cauled the HOMESTEAD FARM which lies south of the turnpike road which runs through said farm, also my house known by the name of the CLASS HOUSE, also one hundred dollars of money to be paid out of my Estate.


4th I give and devise to my SON SAMUEL EARING JUNIOR and to his heirs and assigns forever, eighty acres of land out of the farm whereon I now live, cauled by the name of the HOMESTEAD FARM, and to have possession thereof immediately after my decease, he the SAMUEL EARING giving to my wife annually during her life the one third part of the produce raised thereon the residue or remainder of said farm or homestead. I allow my SON CHARLES EARING to use and occupy for his own benefit during all his natural life and should his WIFE CATY survive him, she is to have the use and benefit of it, during her natural life, but the said CHARLES AND CATY is not allowed to make any sty or wast of any fences, buildings, fruit trees, wood or timber, or any injering of the farm, or to cut or use any of the wood or timber growing, standing or lying on the ground of said farm, except a reasonable supply of firewood for family living upon said farm and for repairing and making the fences on said farm, maybe taken, but none to be carried off the farm, he the said CHARLES giving annually to MY WIFE during her life the one third part of the produce raised thereon, and after the decease of my said SON CHARLES EARING, AND HIS WIFE CATY I give and devise the said residue and remainder of said farm or homestead to the four following persons to wit: To my SON SAMUEL EARING JUNR; TO MY GRANDSON SAMUEL EARING, who is the SON OF MICHAEL EARING, TO MY GRANDSON PETER EARING who is the SON OF CHARLES EARING, and to my GRANDSON SAMUEL EARING who is the SON OF SAMUEL EARING JUNIOR, to be owned by them equally amd to their heirs and assigns.


5th I give and bequeath to my FOUR DAUGHTERS to wit: GERTRUDE WIFE OF JACOB G. SHARP, JANE WIFE OF ADAM BARRINGER, NELLY WIFE OF DAVID GOWEY AND NALEY WIFE OF LEONARD J. RYSDORPH all my cows, sheep, calves, young cattle and household furniture not otherwise disposed of, to be equally divided between them, I also give to each of them the sum of two hundred Dollars in money to be paid to them or their heirs in six months after my decease by my Executors, which said sum of eight hundred Dollars shall be a lien upon my Real Estate and paid out of it if there should be personal property sufficient to pay it.


6th I give and bequeath to my THREE SONS MICHAEL EARING, CHARLES EARING AND SAMUEL EARING JUNIOR all my oxen, horses, and farming materials together with the residue and remainder of my Real and Personal Estate not herein equally divided between them.
I hereby appoint my THREE SONS MICHAEL EARING, CHARLES EARING, AND SAMUEL EARING JUNIOR, Executors of my last will and Testament hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.

Peter (Petrus) Barringer, son of Henrich Barringer and Elizabeth Best , was born on 28 Jan 1754 in Rhinebeck, Duchess County, New York, was christened on 10 Feb 1754 in Reform Church, Rhinebeck Flats, Duchess County, New York, died on 16 May 1817 in Brunswick, Rensselaer County, New York, at age 63, and was buried in Barringer Cemetery, Brunswick, Rensselaer County, New York.

General Notes: In the name of God, Amen, I Peter Baringerof the town of Brunswick, County of Rensselaer and State of New York being weak in body, but of sound & perfect mind & memory blessed be Almighty God for the same do make & publish this my last will & Testament in manner &form following that is to say__
First I give & bequeath unto my daughter Caty Baringer Two hundred Dollars, One hundred thirty three Dollars & thirty four cents to be paid by my son Henry Baringer six years after my decease, which shall be in full for an obligation that I hold against him the said Henry__
And the further sum of Sixty Six Dollars & sixty cents I order to be paid to my said daughter Caty by my son-in-law Anthony Mambert six years after my decease which shall be in full for a certain obligation which I hold against my said son-in-law Anthony Mambert__
I also give & bequeath unto my son Henry my clock. And I also give & beqeath unto my grandson Peter Baringer Jr Twenty Five Dollars and lastly as to all the rest residue & remainder of my personal estate goods & chattels of what kind & nature soever I give & bequeath to my beloved wife Catherine Baringer. And I hereby appoint my son Henry & son-in-law Anthony aforesaid my Executors of this my last will & Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this second day of March in the year of oyr Lord One thousand eight hundred & sixteen__

In the name of God Amen __ I KAREL ARING of the Town of Greenbush in the County of Rensselaer and State of New York being of sound Mind Memory and understanding thanks be to God for the same do make and Publish this my last will and Testament in manner and form following to wit:


I will that all my just debts and funeral charges be duly satisfied and paid in some convenient time after my decease.


I give and bequeath to my BELOVED WIFE CATHERINE all her waring apparel, my Desk, one mulch cow and faw? sheep, the best of my Stock. And I also give to her during her natural life the one third part or Share of All the produce of the Farm on __ (The will badly torn & piece missing) __ household furniture and of that part of the dwelling house in which my SON SAMUEL and I now live, which is occupied by myself, and also of so much of my Barn as may be necessary to Stable the Stock, she may keep and contain the Hay and other fodder necessary for the same.


I give, devise and bequeath to my SON SAMUEL and to his Heirs and assigns forever the dwelling House Barn and Farm
of land whereon I now live situate in the Town of Greenbush (except the use of so much of the House and Barn as is herein willed to my wife CATHARINE during her natural life) On the express terms and conditions that he shall, will and truly pay to my said WIFE CATHERINE yearly and every year for and after my decease for and during the term of her natural life the full one-third part or share of all the produce of said farm except the grass which may grow as any meadow land which he may hereafter clear, she finding the one-third part of the seed grain and bearing one third part of the Rent due on the said farm annually. And I also give to my said SON SAMUEL Two Hundred and Fifty dollars to be raised out of my personal Estate and paid to him by my Executor hereinafter named __ (piece missing) __ personal Estate not hereinbefore given or bequeathed I Give and Bequeath to my SONS JOHN, MICHAEL AND SAMUEL to be by them equally divided share and share alike.


And Lastly, I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my said BELOVED WIFE CATHERINE Executrix and my sons JOHN, MICHAEL AND SAMUEL Executors of this my last will and Testament hereby utterly revoking annulling and making void all former wills, legacies and Executors by me in otherwise before named willed & bequeathed ratifying allowing and confirming this and no other to be my last will and Testament.

General Notes: According to C. E. Banks, John Peckham came from the parish of Woodnesborough, co. Kent, England. John Peckham was admitted an inhabitant of Newport after 1 May 1639. John Peckham of Nuport had his land in Newport recorded sometime between March 1641 and 16 March 1642. At that time he held 40 acres of land, 32 acres in a parcel near Hambrook Mill on Stony River, bordering land of Thomas Clarke, and the rest in meadow and his home lot. He appeared at a General Court of Election as a freeman on 16 March 1641. On 27 January 1642/3, John Peckum of Newport purchased land on the southeast corner of the town, next to his own land, from James Barker of Newport. In 1648, he was a full member of the First Baptist Church, and Eleanor Peckham (his second wife) was baptized that same year. He appears as a freeman of Newport in a list of freemen of the Colony made in 1655. John Peckham was taxed at Newport in 1680. He left a will, dated 6 January 1681, witnessed by John Clarke and Henry Tew, according to a list of seventeen wills presented to the Court in 1700 which lacked a third witness as required by law. However, the contents of the will are unknown.

John Peckham, immigrant ancestor and founder of the family, was a native of England and emigrated to America at a date unknown. He was admitted an inhabitant of the Island of Aquidneck, R. I., March 20, 1638,which is the first record of him in the New World. He later removed to Newport, R. I., where he became a leader of great prominence in the affairs of the Baptist church. He became a freeman at Newport, March 16, 1641. In 1648 John Peckham was one of the ten male members in full communionin the First Baptist Church of Newport, having been one of its founders in 1644. He resided in that part of Newport which later became Middletown,and was made a freeman there in 1655. A stone marked "I P" onthe land of William F. Peckham in Middletown is supposed to mark the grave of John Peckham. He married (first) Mary Clarke, the sister of Rev. John Clarke, of Bedfordshire, England, and Boston and Newport, an associate of Roger Williams. He married (second) Eleanor. John Peckham died after 1681, and prior to 1700. "John Peckham no doubt came to Boston with Sir Henry Van in 1634 and he probably met there Mary Clarke who accompanied her brother John Clarke to Boston about the time. The acquaintance resulted in marriage of which no record can be found. He probably was one of the party called the Ann Hutchinson party, who founded a settlement on the north end of Rhode Island, which became the town of Portsmouth. In 1640 the bounds of his land were established."
On 20 May 1638 his name appeared on the list as one of those admitted as an inhabitant of Portsmouth. He became a freeman in 1641. In 1648 his second wife Eleanor was baptised.
His residence was in that part of Newport which is now Middletown, and a stone marker J. P. is supposed to mark his grave.

5889. Mary Clarke, daughter of Thomas Clarke and Rose Kerrich , was born on 17 Jul 1607 in Westhorpe, Suffolk, England, was christened on 26 Jul 1607 in Westhorpe, Suffolk, England, and died in 1647 in Newport, Rhode Island, at age 40.

General Notes: Mary Clarke probably came to the Colonies at the same time as her brothers, Thomas, John and Joseph, and probably married John Peckham after arriving in Rhode Island as she was apparently granted land by the town of Newport, possibly before her marriage. Mary Clark of Nuport had her land in Newport recorded immediately after that of John Peckham, sometime between March 1641 and 16 March 1642. Her lands consisted of 40 acres "lying upon the millbrook alias hambrook." Peckham's land also lay near the Hambrook mill. It seems unlikely that the town would grant both individuals land if they were already married. Two deeds, one from Joshua Coggeshall to Walter Cunigrave dated 30 May 1651, and one from Walter Cunigrave to John Green dated 6 June 1651, describe lands in Newport adjoining "land granted by the Town of Newport unto Mary Clarke now deceased some time the wife of John Peckham," the first of which deeds was witnessed by John and Elizabeth Clarke, probably the brother of Mary Clarke and his wife.

1656 - Made a Freeman.

1 Nov 1661 - Westerly. He and Tobias Saunders were arrested by Walter Palmer, Constable, and soon after brought before Governor John Endicott, charged with forcible entry and intrusion into the bounds of Southertown, in the Pequot country. He acknowledged he was upon same land and built a small house there. They were committed to prison, both refusing to find security for appearance at General Court.

22 May 1662 - In a letter from Rhode Island to Massachusetts, mention is made of the imprisonment by the latter state of Robert Burdick and Tobias Saunders, for not producing their deeds of Narragansett lands.

18 May 1669 - His name was in a list of inhabitants of Westerly.

17 May 1671 - He took oath of allegiance.

July 1675 - He and his family came to Newport on account of the Indian war, returning to Westerly subsequently.

17 Sep 1679 - He took oath of allegiance.

1680-83-85 - Served as Deputy.

25 Sep 1683 - Samuel Hubbard, having returned to Newport, from a journey to Rye, &c., detailed some events of the trip. He says, "at Westerly, the first day after the Sabbath, brother Burdick buried a son," and among others there, were grandson John Phillips, and Ruth his wife, and Bejamin Burdick; "a very great burial, above twenty horses."

17 May 1691 - He and his wife Ruth, sold John Macoone 100 acres, for 10 pounds.

8 Mar 1692 - He made an agreement with his son-in-law, Joseph Crandall, by which the latter was to take care of his father-in-law and find him with suitable meat, drink, washing, lodging, and apparel, &c., for life, in consideration of which Joseph Crandall was to have the dwelling house and land adjoining, forever, and until Robert Burdick's death, to have use also of oxen, cart, two cows and eight swine, and then to be returned to be disposed of by will, except the cart and wheels.

25 Oct 1692 - He died without perfecting his will, an agreement was made by his sons and sons-in-law. What their father had disposed of by legacy to children was to stand, and what remained, to be divided into nine parts. To son-in-law John Phillips, one part. The other eight parts to daughters Naomi Rogers and Tacy Maxson, only his wearing apparel to be divided between his sons, Thomas, Benjamin, and Samuel. The lands of the deceased that are undivided, to go to sons Samuel, Robert, and Hubbard Burdick. To son Thomas, two oxen and a hog. To daughter Deborah Crandall, bed, warming pan, &c. To son Benjamin, heifer, swine, and an iron pot. To son Samuel, a heifer and a swine. To son Robert, a cow. To son Hubbard, a cow. To daughter Naomi Rogers, a swine, &c. To daughter, Tacy Maxson, a swine. Inventory, 2 oxen, 2 cows, 2 heifers, 6 swine, mare, wearing apparel, warming pan, pewter, &c.

What is unique about the name "Burdick" is that it was only used by a single immigrant to the New World and appears in the official colonial records of Rhode Island <http://users.ids.net/ri>and Massachusetts. That immigrant was Robert, aged 18, and he arrived in Newport, <http://198.49.179.4/mansions.html>Rhode Island in 1651. His name was first officially recorded in 1655, only thirty years after the Pilgrims arrival.
Robert married a fifteen year old girl named Ruth Hubbard in the fall of 1655.
So young Robert and his younger wife settled down on a farm in what was to become Westerly, Rhode Island. Back then the colonies feuded quite regularly, trying to grab each others land. You guessed it, Robert and Ruth, along with a few other hardy settlers, planted roots right in the middle of a tract claimed by both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In 1661 Massachusetts officials ambushed and arrested Robert and another farmer, Tobias Saunders. Robert and Tobias soon became the focus of a 17th Century Mexican Standoff. For two years Rhode Island tried to negotiate their release. So finally, the Rhode Island Swamp Yankees did the only reasonable thing left: they abducted two Massachusetts officials and a prisoner swap took place. Oh, and the land dispute? The big shots in England split the land between Connecticut and Rhode Island. Sorry Massachusetts! Robert's house happened to be on the Rhode Island side where Westerly is today. So that's why it's "Robert Burdick of Rhode Island" instead of "Robert Burdick of Connecticut."
When Robert and Ruth settled down they did so in a prolific fashion. Thomas, Naomi, Ruth, Deborah, Roger, Benjamin, Samuel, Tacy, Robert Jr., and Hubbard, to be specific. Their children were born between 1656 and 1676 with a discrete gap in the early 1660s when Robert was -- uh -- out of town. A final child, born in 1678, died as an infant which seemed to put an end to the kids. So all of us Burdicks can trace our pedigrees back to one of Robert's sons. For the first couple of generations the Burdicks were a population force to be reckoned with in southwest Rhode Island.

General Notes: Ruth had the distinction of being the first white child born in Agawam in the Massachusetts colony, a settlement that was later named Springfield. Ruth's father, Samuel, had come to Salem in 1633 and he was a bit of an individualist.

His will was made October 5, 1725, and proved February 27, 1726/7. the amount of his inventory being 31:18:8. He left 5 each to his daughters, Judity Maxon and Susanna Babcock, and to his daughter Bethiah Hiscox, and his son Thomas Clarke, he left one shilling each saying specifically about his son that he had already received his share.
He married at Westerly, Nov. 16, 1664, Bethiah Hubbard. When he was left a widower, he took a second wife, Hannah Weeden, daughter of William Weeden, and widow of Joseph Clarke's brother, William, who died Sept 30, 1683, and also widow of Thomas Peckham. She died March 3, 1723.

Joseph Clarke, Jr.'s house was about two miles west of the Hopkinton Cemetery on the Pawcatuck. Like his father he became Pastor of the Church, but proved to be as scrappy as his brother-in-law Robert Burdick and his uncle Toby Saunders.

Took family to Westerly and was freeman there 1668. Took family back to Newport in 1675 in fear of King Philip's War. He was seized in his house by Connecticut men to Hartford, Conn., in retaliation for a Rhode Island man buying land in Connecticut and taking Rhode Island oath. He was imprisoned for six weeks and paid a fine, which was reimbused by R.I. Job Babcock also was seized in this border dispute. He marred (2) Hannah Weeden, the widow of his brother William.

5916. Tobias Saunders, son of Tobias Saunders and Isabel Wilde , was born in 1622 in Amersham, England and died on 2 Sep 1695 in Westerly, Rhode Island, at age 73.

General Notes: Tobias Saunders came to America from England. Before coming to America he was a soldier, one of the King's Life Guards. Charles H. Green says that he was a captain in Oliver Cromwell's army. He and three brothers came to America, date unknown. In 1643 he was living in Taunton, MA, and at Newport, RI in 1655. He was one of the purchasers and one of the first settlers of Westerly in 1661. He held a quarter of a share in the division of the land, in September.
In Nov 1661 he was arrested with Robert Burdick and Joseph Clark and carried to Boston, examined, tried, fined and imprisoned until they should pay the fine and find sureties of the peace.
He joined the Newport Seventh Day Baptist church and the members living at Westerly frequently held meetings at his house before the meetinghouse was built. 17 Sep 1679 he took the oath of allegiance. He was Justice f=of the Peace and sometimes performed marriage ceremonies. His wife was Mary. She was born in 1643 and was also a member of the Newport church.
Tobias and John Crandall were appointed "conservators of his Majesty's peace" immediately after the incorporation of Westerly. Tobias was a member of the Town Council, and affixed his name or mark to town documents of the town of Westerly.
His will was written 9 Aug 1688 and he died in 1695. The inventory amounted to F147 12s. Tobias lived just over the range of hills to the south of the old Westerly meetinghoue. He is supposed to have been buried in the Clarke burying ground near the old Westerly meetinghouse.

I, Walter Woodward, of Scituate, in the jurisdiction of New Plymouth in New England, in America, being weak in body, but of sound mind and perfect memory, praise to Almighty God for the same, do make this my last will and Testament in manner as followeth: First, and most principally, I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God, my creator, in and through Jesus Christ, my only Saviour and Redeemer, and my body unto decent and ... burial at the discretion of my executors with the advice of the rest of my sons hereafter named. And my temporal estate I dispose of as hereafter followeth: Imprimis. I give and bequeath unto Thomas Woodward, my eldest son, a parcel of upland containing five acres, lying in Scituate aforesaid, bounded by the lands of Henry Ewell on the south and the Common on the north, to be enjoyned to him and his heirs forever. Walter Woodworth came from Kent Co., England, to Scituate, Mass., 1635. He was assigned the third lot on Kent St., which runs along the ocean front, at the corner of Meeting House Lane, and there he built a house. In that year he owned other land, a tract on the First Herring Brook not far below Stockbridge Mill, where afterwards stood the residence of the poet Samuel Woodworth, and another tract on Walnut Tree Hill, just west of the present [1901] Greenbush or South Scituate R. R. Station, which was in early times called Walter Woodworth's Hill, and in 1666 he became a purchaser of sixty acres at Weymouth. In 1640 Walter was assessed nine shillings for the public use, and March 2, 1641, freeman; and in Jun 4, 1645, he was appointed surveyor of highways in Scituate, and again in 1646 and 1656. His name appears frequently on the town records of Scituate as juror, etc. In 1654 he was a member of the First Church, which ordained Charles Chauncy as their minister."121 <../rr_src/src002.html>

"Walter Woodworth was freeman in Scituate 1640, and settled amongst the men of Kent, 3d. lot on Kent street, south side of Meeting-house land in 1635. He had other lands in 1635, viz. on the first Herring brook 30 rods below Stockbridge's mill: and on the northwest side of Walnut tree hill. He left no record of the births of his children; from incidental records we find Benjamin, Walter, Thomas, Joseph, Mary, wife of Aaron Simons 1677, Martha, the wife of Lieut. Zachary Daman 1679, Mehitable, who was unfortunate in regard to her health, (see witchcraft.)"<../rr_src/src001.html>

It has been frequently speculated that Walter's wife was Elizabeth Rogers, b. ca. 1620, daughter of Thomas (ca 1586-12 Nov 1638) and Mary Rogers. But evidence for that conclusion remains lacking.

Bequests were as follows: to Lidia my wife my whole Estate ... both Real & personal ... to Improve and make use of according to her discretion ... during the time of her naturall life continuing in my name I do farther Give power to my afo resaid wife that if ... she Should Stand in need of more for her necessary suppo rt ... to make sale of such a part of my meadow lands as may supply her necessity . .. I do hereby farther Give power to my said wife while continuing in my name .. To dispose of all or any part of my Estate as above said that shall Remain in her hands by such proportions or distributions amongst our children as ... she shall think to be most meet. "Lidia my said wife" was appointed executrix, and "my Brother in law Jeremiah Hatch overseer of this my last will." General Notes: From the Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island and "1000 Years of Hubbard History," we learn:

He says of himself: "Such was the pleasure of Jehovah towards me, I was born of good parents, my mother brought me up in the fear of the Lord, in Mendelsham, in catechising me and hearing choice ministers, & c."

Oct 1633 - Salem, MA. He came this month from England.

1634 - He went to Watertown, MA, where he says he joined the church, "by giving account of my faith."

Oct 1635 - With a party of about one hundred, he started to march through the wilderness to the Connecticut Valley; winter coming on before they reached their destination they suffered much from exposure, and insufficient food. Samuel Hubbard remained at Windsor during the winter where he married to Tacy Cooper by Mr. Ludlow. Tacy Cooper had come to Dorchester, MA, 9 Jun 1634, and was one of the party.

In 1636, shortly after their marriage, they went to Wethersfield, CT. 10 May 1639 - Springfield, MA. He moved here at this date, in search of peace, and a church was soon gathered; he says: "I gave acct. of my faith" and that there were "five men in all...my wife soon after added."

To escape persecution under the harsh laws of Massachusetts they agin moved 10 May 1647 to Fairfield, CT. His stay here was short: "God having enlightened both, but mostly my wife, into his holy ordinances of baptizing only of visible believers, and being very zealous for it, she was mostly struck at and answered two terms publicly, where I was also said to be as bad as she, and sore threatened imprisonment to Hartford jail, if not to renounce it or to remove; that Scripture came into our mouths, if they persecute you in one place, flee to another; and so we did 2 day of October, 1648, we went for Rhode Island, and arrived there 12 day. I and my wife upon manifestation of our faith were baptized by brother John Clarke, 3 day Nov 1648."

7 Aug 1651 - He was sent by the church to visit the brethren in prison at Boston, viz: John Clarke, Obadiah Holmes and John Crandall.

Oct 1652 - "I and my wife had hands laid on us by brother Joseph Torrey."

He was admitted Freeman of Newport, RI in 1655.

1 Oct 1657 - "Brother Obadiah Holmes and I went to the Dutch and Gravesend and to Jamaica and to Flushing and to Hamsted and to Cow Bay." They came home 15 Nov 1657.

In 1664 he was chosen to be General Solicitor, in case of inability of Lawrence Turner.

He writes: "My wife took up the keeping of the Lord's holy Seventh Day Sabbath. the 10th day March, 1665. I took it up 1 day April 1665; our daughter Ruth, 25 Oct 1666; Rachel, 15 Jan 1666; Bethiah, Feb 1666; our son Joseph Clarke, 23 Feb 1666."

7 Apr 1668 - "I went to Boston to public dispute with those baptised there."

Jul 1668 - He wrote his cousin, John Smith, of London, from Boston, where he had been to a disputation: "Through God's great mercy, the Lord have given me in this wilderness, a good, diligent, careful, painful and very loving wife; we, through mercy, live comfortably, praised be God, as co- heirs together of one mind in the Lord, traveling through this wilderness to our heavenly Sion, knowing we are pilgrims as our fathers were, and good portion being content therewith. A good house, as with us judged, 25 acres of ground fenced, and four cows which give, one young heifer and three calves, and a very good mare, a trade, a carpenter, a health to follow it, and my wife very diligent and painful, praised be God. This is my joy and crown, in humility I speak of it, for God's Glory, I trust all, both sons in law and daughters are in visible order in general; but in especial manner my son Clarke and my three daughters, with my wife and about 14 walk in the observation of God's holy sanctified 7 day Sabbath, with much comfort and liberty, for so we and all ever had and yet have in this Colony."

16 Dec 1671 - He wrote to his children at Westerly, about the differences between those favoring the seventh day observance and the rest of the church. Several spoke on both sides. Mr. Hubbard gave his views. Brother Torrey said they required not my faith. Other discussion followed: "They replied fiercely, it was a tumult. J. Torrey stopped them at last."

With his wife, one daughter, and four other persons he formed the first Seventh Day Baptist Church in America. He writes: "We entered into a church covenant the 23rd day of December, 1671, viz: William Hiscox, Stephen Mumford, Samuel Hubbard, Roger Baxter, sister Hubbard, sister Mumford, Rachel Langworthy," &c. Their church was not formed without a depature by their former associates from that spirit of toleration and "soul liberty" which Roger Williams claimed; for the members who united on Dec. 23, had been excommunicated Dec. 7, when the Rev. Obidiah Holmes preached against their doctrine of Seventh Day observance, and even declared "they had left Christ, and gone after Moses." There is extant a letter from Roger Williams to Samuel Hubbard, in which he argues the position taken by the latter, and cites various texts against his views; but it is written in a very different spirit from that shown by the Newport church, and recognizes the conscientious motives which actuated Hubbard. "Bro' Hiscox and I send this Church to N. London and Westerly, 7 day Mar 1675," and again March, 1677/8 and 1686.

1675 - He says: "I have a testament of my grandfather Cocke's, printed 1549, which he hid in his bedstraw, lest it be found and burned, in Queen Mary's days."

1 Nov 1675 - He wrote Mr. Henry Reeves, at Jamaica; "Very sudden and strange changes these times afford in this, our age, everywhere, as I hear and now see in N.E. God's hand seems to be stretched out against N. England, by wars by the natives, and many Englishmen fall at present." "This island doth look to ourselves as yet, by mercy not one slain, blessed be God." "My wife and 3 daughters, who are all here by reason of the Indian war, with their 15 children, desire to remember their christian love to you."

Nov 1676, he writes: "In the midst of these troubles of the war [King Philip's] Lieut. Joseph Torrey, Elder of Mr. Clarke's Church, having one daughter living at Squamicut and his wife being there, he said unto me `Come, let us send a boat to Squamicut, my all is there, and part of yours.' We sent a boat, and his wife, his daughter and son in law and all their children and my two daughters, and their children [one had eight, the other three, with an apprentice boy] all came. ...My son Clarke came afterwards before winter, and my other daughter's husband in the spring, and they have all been at my house to this day."

Feb 26, 1676, he writes a nephew at Rye: "I bless my God, my condition is comfortable, and I am very well contented with knowing it is more to give than to receive. ...My wife and daughter Langworthy desired me to write about flax, yet if you bring some 20 pound if at a pound of flax for a pound of wool, it's so at Stonington; if bring Indian Corn it's now 4 pound of wool a bushel and I think it wiil be more."

Sep 2, 1677, he writes: "Truely Children for the present I am not altogether beset with thoughts (as its judged from Satan) I have been in very sore exercise, ever since br. Hiscox came to ye and a week before, occasioned by a sudden sentence of the Ch. declaring yet I have not the gift of prophesying publickly in the church tho' hereto fore judged by those brethren of the Old Ch. Yet by most here and encouraged in it, was so sorely set on, that I was horribly tempted to deny all, yet kept; but sorely harried. I pray be silent in this manner for the present."

29 Jun 1678 - He wrote Dr. Stennett, of London: "From my own house in Mayford, in Newport," &c. "Last winter the Lord visited me with a very sore cough as long as strength, and breath did last, oft 5 times together only a little respite; my dear wife oft took her farewell of me, my dear brethren watched me in their terms. Major Cranston [his physician] I sent for - he judged none help or hope for sure, but for present refreshment he gave me a small vial of spirits, which I took, and had some sleep, but my cough rather increased." He was visited by the church which drew into the other room agreeing to seek God's face for me poor one. "The next day I would have gone to town to give public praise, but was advised not to go," &c. "Our Governor died the 19th day of June, 1678, buried 20th day, all this island was invited, many others were there, judged near a thousand people, our brother Hiscox spake there excellently," &c.

1680 - Taxed 6s. 2d.

In 1683, Samuel Hubbard went by water to visit friends at Rye, returning by Fairfield, Milford, New Haven, Guilford, Lyme, New London, and Westerly, arriving home after six weeks absence, Sept 25. In a letter dated May 23, 1684, he says: "What marvelous rich grace...hath made known his holy sabbath to such poor worms: first to my wife, I next, the first settlers or planters in N.E. (one brother and one sister came over with the practice of it)."

19 Dec 1686 - He wrote to John Thronton, of Providence: "My old brother who was before me, you and brother Joseph Clarke (only alive) in that ordinance of baptism, I next and my wife in New England, although we stept before you in other ordinances: Oh! let us strive still to be first in the things of God," &c. ..."My wife and I counted up this year 1686: My wife a creature 78 years, a convert 62 years, married 50 years and independent and joined to a church 52 years, a baptist 38 years, a Sabbath Keeper 21 years. I a creature of 76 years, a convert 60 years and independent and joined to a church 52 years, a baptist 38 years, a Sabbath Keeper 21 years. We are by rich grace bornup and adorned with rich mercies above many, as to have all my three daughters in the same faith and order, and 2 of their husbands and 2 of my grandaughters and their husbands also with us. O praise the Lord for his goodness endures forever! Not to us, not to us poor creatures. These may be my last lines unto you, farewell."

7 May 1688 - He wrote Richard Brooks, of Boston: "The mesles is not gone here. My daughter Rachel have them and some of her family." "

From "1000 Years of Hubbard History," we learn:

"Samuel Hubbard, youngest son of James and Naomi (Cocke) Hubbard, was born in Menddelsham (a market town about eighty miles northeast of London), Suffolk County, in 1610. He arrived in Salem Mass., in October, 1633, and probably came in the ship James, Grant, master, which left Gravesend, England late in August, 1633, and arrived in Massachusetts Bay October 10, 1633."

"1000 Years of Hubbard History," says this about Samuel Hubbard's diary:

"Copious notes were made from this diary by Dr, Isaac Backus, a Baptist historian of about 1777. These notes are now possessed by Ray Greene Huling, of New Bedford, Mass., though the original diary and other valuable manuscripts of Samuel Hubbard disappeared about 1852. There are living descendants of this Samuel Hubbard through Bethiah Hubbard and Joseph Clarke of various names, but none of the name of Hubbard."

"Tacy Cooper who was born in England in 1608 and came to Dorchester, Mass., June 9, 1634, and to Dorchester (Windsor), Ct., in 1635. She had brothers Robert, of Yarmouth, Norfolk, and John of London, Eng. Robert returned to England from America in 1644."

In May 1647, "Samuel was now with his wife imbibing freely and preaching ardently the doctrines of Anabaptism." Upon arrival in Rhode Island, 12 Oct 1648, "I and my wife upon manifestation of our faith were baptised by brother Joseph Clarke, 3 day of November, 1648." "He was a zealous Baptist and public religious disputant. For twenty three years he belonged to the First Baptist Church of Newport."

The study of the Scriptures in America brought Samuel and Tacy Hubbard to the Baptist principle of believer’s baptism in 1647, and membership in the First Baptist Church of Newport, Rhode Island. Beginning in 1665, their family and several others became convinced of the seventh day Sabbath and joined in fellowship with Stephen Mumford and his wife who had held Sabbath convictions while members of a Baptist church in Tewksbury, England. When two couples gave up their Sabbath convictions, the others found it difficult to share communion with them within First Baptist. Thus five members joined with the Mumfords in a covenant relationship, establishing the first Seventh Day Baptist Church in America in December, 1671. Samuel, had come to Salem in 1633 and he was a bit of an individualist. He married his wife, Tasy Cooper, in January of 1636 after marching through the winter woods from Watertown, Mass. to become one of the founding families of Connecticut. Because of his Baptist views he sought refuge in the more religiously tolerant Rhode Island Colony in 1648. In December of 1671 he, his wife, his daughter, and a handful of others formed the Seventh Day Baptist Church <http://www.seventhdaybaptist.org>of America.

John Clarke was taxed 7s. 8d. in lands valued at ?5 in Finningham in the subsidy of 1565/6, and was taxed 2s. 8d. in lands worth 20s. at Finningham and 13s. 8d. in lands worth ?5 at Westhorpe in 1575/6. In both subsidies, his mother, Margaret Clarke, widow, was also taxed in lands in Westhorpe. John Clarke "the younger," a customary tenant of the manor of Finningham, is mentioned in a suit brought against Richard Mulliner by Nicholas Raynberd on 20 February 1587/8, as having surrendered lands of Thomas Cooke to the Lady of the Manor for the use of Raynberd on or about 1 September 1587. He may have been the John Clarke who, along with Christopher Clarke, was taxed 16d. in lands valued at ?4 in Finningham in the subsidy of 1596/7, and who was taxed in a second subsidy that year 8d. in lands worth 40s. in Finningham. However, this may have been his son.

He gave his lands in Westhorpe, Finningham, and Gislingham to his son, John Clarke, who was to take possession only at the age of 24, and if he died before that time, the lands were to go to his other son, Thomas Clarke.

Warwick, dated 20 Mar 1620, mentions wife Joane; son Thomas Belcher, sons-in-law, John Bonney & William Cook; daughters, Elizabeth Cook, Isabel Bonney & Alice Pemberton.[6] It seems likely that Thomas Belcher, son of Gregory of this Will, was the Thomas Belcher who lived in the hamlet of Wardend, Parish of Aston, co. Warwick, where he had three children recorded: John, bap. 24 Aug 1604; Gregory, bap. 30 Mar 1606; and Margery, bap. 9 Jul 1615. Aston is about 9 miles northwest of Berkeswell.
